A Quick History of Duck NC
Like the other Currituck County beaches of Corolla and Carova, Duck was initially undiscovered until the late 1600s, when a small community of local settlers believed to be shipwreck descendants, made this their home. For centuries, Duck had remained isolated with only a small population of residents and a few adventurous vacationers curious about waterfowl hunting, fishing, and more. Then, in the 1990s, Duck and its 7 miles of beautiful beaches were transferred over to Dare County and new development.
As the paved NC Highway 12 was being forged on the Northern Outer Banks, developer attention grew in the Currituck and Dare County beaches, leading to county and local governments taking steps to ensure the small and charming character of the various towns wouldn’t be lost with all the development. In 1984, Duck was established as a North Carolina Beautification District by the North Carolina General Assembly. By 1986, a 7-mile of multiple use trail within the town limits was agreed upon by the community and over the next few decades, careful planning of Outer Banks NC vacation homes for sale ensured that while amenities abound, the picturesque landscape and natural resources of the town remained.
Tourists and residents of Duck on the Outer Banks NC get to enjoy miles of natural beaches, waterfont sunrises and sunsets, combined with some gourmet markes, low-key coastal shopping centers, and four star restaurants.
